Esquipulas, in the department of Chiquimula, grew around its basilica, home to the Black Christ of Esquipulas, a wooden image carved in 1594 by Quirio Cataño. It is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Central America, and the town is fullest around the feast day on 15 January and during Holy Week.
The town lies close to the borders with Honduras and El Salvador, and many pilgrims arrive from both countries.
